Dear Mel and Chris,
Here are tax deductions, credits, and benefits you could utilize as parents:
- Children’s Fitness Tax Credit: Increased to $1,000 (2015) from $500 for eligible activities such as hockey or gymnastics.
- Child Care Expense Deduction: A tax deduction is allowed for child care expenses paid by working parents for daycare fees, boarding school, hockey school, or summer camp fees. Up to and including the 2014 tax year, the dollar limits are $7,000 per child under age 7 and $4,000 per child aged 7 to 16. Those dollar limits are being increased by $1,000 each (2015).
- Adoption Expense Tax Credit: Increased to $15,000 (2015) from $11,774.
- Universal Child Care Benefit: Increased to $1,920 (2015) from $1,200 for children under 6; and a newly introduced $720 for children 6 to 17.
It is important to be aware of the tax deductions and credits you qualify for and proactively keep receipts, file applications and claim things by the books.
